Spanish Film: the Deconstruction of Social Myths

FLLG 395 (sec 2), SPAN 395 (sec 2), LS 395 (sec 3)

Description:

This class examines the construction and deconstruction of political, economical and social myths in Spain through film from the 50’s to the 90’s. It’s a cultural studies class that focuses on Spanish society from Francisco Franco’s dictatorship (1939-1975) to the present-day period of democracy. We will be analysing such topics as the Spanish Civil War, political repression, poverty, religious values, sex, prescriptions on “womanhood” and “manhood”, homosexuality, lesbianism, national identity, “Spanishness” and racism. We are studying some of the most representative Spanish film directors in the history of Spanish cinema (Luis Buñuel, Carlos Saura and Mario Camus), some well known directors (Vicente Aranda, Eloy de la Iglesia, Montxo Armendáriz, Fernando Trueba, Bigas Luna, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, Ventura Pons), some of the new generation of young directors (men: Fernando de León, women: Isabel Coixtet, Manane Rodriguez, Marta Balletbó-Coll) and, of course, last year’s Oscar winner of best foreign movie, Pedro Almodóvar.
